Gov Tambuwal likely to dump APC Monday

There are strong indications that Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State may decamp to the Peoples Democratic Party between now and Monday. A reliable source privy to the Governor's planned defection confided in Daily Trust that the Governor, 23 members of the House of Assembly and some leaders of APC have met and resolved to leave the party for PDP. The meeting, he said was convened at government house at the odd hours of Thursday and that  it was attended by leaders of the party from the 23 local government areas of the state, including the party's state executive committee members. The meeting was said to have  started at  about  12 midnight and lasted till 6am on Friday. However, another leader of the party who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the meeting was strictly for the Governor's '' loyalists''  in the party. "Some leaders of the party were not invited because they are not loyal to the Governor," he said Daily Trust le

Why El-Rufai is angry at Saraki – Senator

A federal lawmaker, Rafiu Ibrahim (PDP, Kwara) has said the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai is ‘angry’ at the Senate President, Bukola Saraki because of the Senate’s refusal to approve $350 million loan sought by the Kaduna State Government from funders. Last year, the Kaduna State Government requested the loan for ‘Development Policy Operation’ from the World Bank. Mr El-Rufai had said the state needed the million loan from the World Bank to achieve its governance objectives in the “short to medium term.” The loan would be ploughed back into critical development areas in Kaduna, the governor explained. However, the Senate, in March, decided not to approve the request after a committee headed by Shehu Sani (APC-Kaduna) advised against it on the ground that the state is the second most indebted in the country. Mr Sani, who is the chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign and Domestic Loans, argued that the new loan if approved will erode economic viability of the State. His posi

New malaria drug could help 8.5 million people

A new drug to treat malaria, which scientists have described as a “phenomenal achievement”, has been given the green light by authorities in the United States. The medicine, tafenoquine, is specifically for the recurring form of malaria – caused by the parasite Plasmodium vivax – which makes 8.5 million people ill each year. This type of malaria can remain dormant in the liver for years before reawakening many times. A drug – primaquine – to get rid of malaria in the liver already exists but unlike the single dose of tafenoquine needed, primaquine often needs to be taken for 14 days. Professor Ric Price, of Oxford University, told the BBC: “The ability to get rid of the parasite in the liver with a single dose of tafenoquine is a phenomenal achievement and it represents one of the mo

Hazard offered €15m per year to join Real Madrid

Image
According to 'TMW', Eden Hazard has emerged as Real Madrid's top target to replace Cristiano Ronaldo at the Bernabeu, with 'Los Blancos' having put together an offer so good that the player would be mad to refuse. The Belgian's future at Stamford Bridge is unclear and with no Champions League football to offer him this year the 'Blues' face an uphill struggle to keep hold of their star, particularly after his recent admissions. With that in mind, the aforementioned source claims that Real Madrid bigwigs have already outlined the offer that they are set to put on the table for Hazard, who would earn €15m per year in the Spanish capital, a significant increase on his current salary of €12m per annum. As if that weren't tempting enough, the move would also provide Hazard with a new challenge at the club of his dreams and allow him to continue playing top-level European football. Mbappe misses France training

Image
France forward Kylian Mbappe did not take part in training on the eve of their World Cup semi-final against Belgium. Paris Saint-Germain teenager  Mbappe has been one of the stars  of the tournament in Russia, scoring three times, including a brace to crown a destructive showing against Argentina in the round of 16. Head coach Didier Deschamps told a pre-match news conference before training that  he expected to have a full squad available  to face Roberto Martinez's men and explained players had been rested from recent sessions as a precaution. Also during the open part of activities at Krestovsky Stadium,  Benjamin Pavard and N'Golo Kante worked away  from the main group – jogging lightly around the pitch with a member of France's coaching staff. "Nobody is out, even though  we rested some of our players  as a precautionary measure," Deschamps said. "Everybody should be fine for tomorrow."

While authorities search for the missing, residents begin the cleanup, wading through flooded houses and streets.
