As North Korea intensifies its missile program, the U.S. opens an $11 billion base in South Korea

CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — This small American city has four schools and five churches, an Arby’s, a Taco Bell and a Burger King. The grocery store is offering a deal on Budweiser as the temperature soars, and out front there’s a promotion for Ford Mustangs.  But for all its invocations of the American heartland, this growing town is in the middle of the South Korean countryside, in an area that was famous for growing huge grapes. “We built an entire city from scratch,” said Col. Scott W. Mueller, garrison commander of Camp Humphreys, one of the U.S. military’s largest overseas construction projects. If it were laid across Washington, the 3,454-acre base would stretch from Key Bridge to Nationals Park, from Arlington National Cemetery to the Capitol. “New York has been a city for 100-some years and they’re still doing construction. But the majority of construction here will be done by 2021,” Mueller said. (New York was actually founded nearly 400 years ago.) The U.S. mili

Breaking. O J Simpson to be released in few mins.

Image
O. J. Simpson , the former football hero and actor whose good-guy image vanished when he was accused of murdering his ex-wife and her friend, will go free after serving nine years in a Nevada prison on charges stemming from an armed robbery, a state parole board ruled on Thursday. Mr. Simpson, who turned 70 this month, went before the board as a man convicted of taking a group of accomplices, two of them armed with guns, to a cheap Las Vegas hotel room in 2007 to take hundreds of items from a sports memorabilia dealer. But it is the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, for which he was acquitted after the most-watched trial in history, that have cast the longer, darker shadow over his life and reputation. After his conviction in 2008, a judge sentenced Mr. Simpson nine to 33 years in state prison, meaning that he becomes eligible for parole for the first time on Oct. 1. Based on his age and the fact that he has been a model prisoner, the Nevada Board of Parol

Southern Leaders Tell FG to Protect Southerners in the North

The Southern Leaders Forum has called on Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to, as a matter of urgency, address the nation on measures being taken by the federal government to protect the Igbo and other southerners from attacks by Arewa youths, who weeks ago, gave the Igbo up to October 1, 2017, to leave the North. Rising from a meeting held in Lagos at the residence of Chief Albert Korubo Horsfall, the leaders expressed concern that no action appeared to have been taken by the government on the quit order. They also insisted that the country must be restructured along the 1963 Republican Constitution that gave the federating units a leeway over their affairs. The leaders also said Nigeria must be restructured by December 2017. In attendance at the meeting were leaders of thoughts from the South-west, the South-east and the South-south. A communique read by Senator Bassey Henshaw at the end of the meeting reads: “The leaders noted with gratitude the statement by the Acting President th

Etisalat Group Confirms Withdrawal from the Country

Image
In confirmation of its withdrawal from Nigeria, the Abu Dhabi-based Etisalat Group announced Monday that it had terminated its management agreement with its Nigerian arm and gave Etisalat Nigeria three weeks to phase out the brand in the country. The decision of the Abu Dhabi-owned network operator, which once held a 45 per cent stake in Etisalat Nigeria and 25 per cent of its preference shares, arose after its $1.2 billion loan talks with 13 Nigerian banks collapsed. Chief Executive of Etisalat International Hatem Dowidar said Monday that there was no need for the brand in Nigeria after the collapse of the loan talks. However, he was silent on the loan repayment to the Nigerian lenders. Nigerian regulators had intervened last week to save Etisalat Nigeria from collapse after talks with its lenders to renegotiate a $1.2 billion loan had failed. However, Etisalat Nigeria, in a statement issued three weeks ago, had claimed that it had repaid 42 per cent of the loan, leaving an o
