UK asset forfeiture: Nigerian property owners seek VAIDS intervention

Following the new United Kingdom’s regulation on ‘Unexplained Wealth Orders,’ Nigerians, who own property in the country have approached the Federal Ministry of Finance’s Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme for help. Sources said the property owners on Friday crashed VAIDS’ hotlines with calls. The Federal Inland Revenue Service and Ministry of Finance’s sources said on Sunday that the unprecedented level of calls was not unconnected with the new UK regulation on UWOs. The sources disclosed that the confidential hotlines that were provided to enable the booking of appointments had received massive calls and frantic requests from taxpayers in the last 72 hours, asking for extension of time to complete their VAIDS declaration forms. VAIDS allows Nigerian taxpayers to restate their income and assets without limit and thus could potentially allow those who own property that cannot be explained by their previously declared income to regularise by declaring and paying the co

Tension in Imo as oil communities condemn Okorocha’s amnesty to Don Waney’s men

LEADERS of Awara Court Area, comprising Awara, Asaa and Obile communities have condemned the recent amnesty granted to members of Don Waney’s gang by the Imo State Government. Chief Rochas Okorocha In a statement made available to journalists, the leaders questioned the rationale behind the amnesty to these same militants who were recently declared wanted alongside their leader, Don Waney for the January 1, 2018 killings in Omoku, Rivers State. Coordinator of the group, Mr. Ifeanyi Isife who signed the statement recalled that the Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike visited Assa, Obile and Awara oil producing communities in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State and discovered that everybody in the community had deserted because of the proximity between these communities and Omoku community in Rivers State. The statement read: “Thus, the commissioner had alerted the state government on the need to provide security in these communities. It took the combination of the commissio

Plateau governor sacks all commissioners

A statement by the governor’s director of press and public affairs, Emmanuel Nanle, on Thursday directed all the sacked commissioners to hand over to the permanent secretaries of their respective ministries immediately. He therefore calls o

Yusuf’s reinstatement, a shame to Buhari’s anti-corruption war – ASCSN

Image
The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria has said the reinstatement of the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf by President Muhammadu Buhari, is another dent on the anti-corruption war. In a statement issued on Wednesday, ASCSN Secretary-General, Alade Lawal, said the action of the President shows that the government’s anti-graft was selective. The statement reads, “This is one intervention too many and as such Mr. President should allow Yusuf to retire from service to have time to run his personal business. How can a government official being investigated for a whopping sum of N919m fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission be reinstated by the government that came to power promising to sanitise the system? This is very unfortunate. “We, therefore, urge President Buhari to rescind his action and allow Prof. Yusuf to leave the system in peace. “Thus, if Prof. Yusuf resumes as the Executive Secretary of NHI
