Measles cases hit record high in Europe

More than 41,000 people have been infected in the first six months of 2018, leading to 37 deaths. Last year there were 23,927 cases and the year before 5,273. Experts blame this surge in infections on a drop in the number of people being vaccinated. In England, there have been 807 cases so far this year. The WHO is calling on European countries to take action. Public Health England say the outbreaks in England are largely due to people who have travelled to areas of mainland Europe that have had outbreaks. Measles is highly infectious and spreads by droplets in coughs and sneezes. The infection lasts seven to 10 days. But while most people recover completely, it can cause some serious complications, including: encephalitis (infection and swelling of the brain) meningitis febrile convulsions pneumonia liver infection (hepatitis) The MMR vaccine can prevent infection but discredited research 20 years ago that erroneously linked MMR to autism has stopped some people from trusti

The party made the call in a statement by the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the party, Mr Bashir Bolarinwa, on Saturday in Ilorin. Bolarinwa said Saraki should tow the path of honour and relinquish the office of the Senate President exclusively reserved for the party with majority members in the Senate. “Members of the hallowed chamber must be truly distinguished in character and conduct. “The path of honour was led by Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio who, before defecting to ruling party, had honorably resigned as the leader of the minority party in the Senate. “So Saraki should act honorably resign from that office of trust. He should for once tow the path of honour and stop heating up the polity unduly,” he added. Kogi Bye-election starts on peaceful note, experiences high turnout

The House of Representatives Lokoja-Kogi federal constituency bye-election commenced peacefully as early as 8am on Saturday. Sources  report that electoral officials in some of the polling units arrived with materials to time. Electorates in their hundreds trooped to the polling units as early as 6:30am to exercise their civic rights. However, attempt to snatch election materials and ballot box at one of the polling units at Ward B was frustrated by determined voters. At Paparanda square, Independent National Electoral Commission staff had to flee the polling unit for safety due to confusion created by sporadic gunshots by security men attached to a government official. The official was alleged to be going from one polling units to another in Lokoja when he was confronted by youths who questioned the legality of his action. In Gegu and Koton Larfe towns in Kogi Local Government, the turnout of voters was impressive with women and youths in majority. The candidate of the PDP, who

India to block Facebook, WhatsApp in cases of misuse

India has asked its telecom operators to find ways of blocking applications such as Facebook and messaging app WhatsApp in the case of misuse, according to a document seen by Reuters on Tuesday. India has in recent months intensified efforts to crack down on mass message forwards after it found that people were using social media and messaging apps to spread rumors and stoke public anger. WhatsApp in particular has faced the wrath of Indian regulators after false messages circulated on the messaging platform led to a series of lynchings and mob beatings across the country. The department of telecommunications in July asked Indian telecom service providers, as well as mobile and internet industry bodies, to “explore various possible options” to block such apps. “You are requested to explore various possible options and confirm how the Instagram/Facebook/Whatsapp/Telegram and such other mobile apps can be blocked on internet,” according to the government letter dated July 18 and seen
