Xenophobia: Demand compensation for Nigerians killed in South Africa, Lagos Assembly urges Buhari

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday demanded that the South African Government should pay compensation to victims of the latest xenophobic attacks in the country. The lawmakers made the call at the plenary where they condemned the unwarranted attacks. Mr. Tunde Braimoh, representing Kosofe II, who raised the issue under ‘Matter of Urgent Importance’, recalled how Nigeria helped South Africa during the apartheid regime. Braimoh wondered how the country suddenly decided that Nigerians were now strangers in their land.

FCT to revoke undeveloped plots

The Federal Capital Territory Administration says it has identified  undeveloped plots of land in serviced districts of the Phases I, II & III of the Federal Capital City, Abuja and had given the owners three months’ grace period to develop them or risk revocation.  The FCT Director of Land Administration, Adamu Hussaini, said in Abuja on Tuesday that this was one of the highpoints of the Federal Capital Territory Executive Committee meeting held recently. He stated, “Allottees of plots of land within Phases I, II & III of the Federal Capital City that have been serviced with infrastructure should take major steps to develop them or have them revoked. Government has expended huge amount of money to open up those districts by providing the engineering infrastructure and would not afford to be left fallow”.  A statement by the Director, Information and Customer Service, Abuja Geographical Information Service, Mohammed Sule, explained that the director of lands said the FCT

No Certificate Listed On Buhari’s CV —Abba Kyari

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, admitted before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja on Tuesday that no certificate was listed on the President’s curriculum vitae and that none was among the documents obtained from Cambridge University earlier tendered as exhibits, PUNCH reports. Kyari, who testified as the President’s third defence witness, also admitted obtaining the Cambridge documents personally on July 18, 2019. The Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, had filed the petition before the tribunal to challenge the victory of President Buhari and his All Progressives Congress in the February 23, 2019 poll. Part of the grounds of the petition was that Buhari did not possess the academic qualification necessary to contest the poll. Under a cross examination by the petitioners’ lawyer, Kyari said he was 67 years old and that he had known Buhari for nearly 40 years. Kyari also said he signed

Obasanjo writes Buhari again,

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has written yet another letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, warning that Nigeria is tipping towards a dangerous cliff and only the president could forestall such a looming disaster. Mr Obasanjo a former Nigerian leader, between 1999 and 2007, said Nigeria has been consumed by violence and ethnic divisions since Mr Buhari assumed office four years ago, in a manner not seen for decades. In the July 15, 2019 letter, Mr Obasanjo said the world, especially Western countries, has been warning Nigeria against descending into a state of violence because any outbreak would be difficult to contain. He warned that for Mr Buhari to be able to stop the “smouldering ethnic agitations”, he would have to stop fanning “the embers of hatred, disaffection and violence.” Mr Obasanjo also called on armed herdsmen to publicly state their grievances in order to form a national discussion around it, rather than waging a violent campaign across the country. Redknapp reveals number of players Man United need to sign

Former Tottenham manager, Harry Redknapp, has said that Manchester United are ‘miles away’ from challenging for the Premier League title. He said the Red Devils could need six additional signings after the arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have already signed Daniel James in an £18 million deal from Swansea City and are on the verge of announcing the acquisition of Wan-Bissaka for £50m from Crystal Palace. “But Redknapp has warned Solskjaer that an overhaul of his squad is still needed and believes United could slip out of the top six in the Premier League next season,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “I think next season we might see one of the big six dropping out.

Nigeria vs Guinea: What Mikel Obi did about Super Eagles’ bonus row with NFF

Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has intervened in the bonus row between the players and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the BBC reports. The players had threatened to boycott training, after the federation failed to pay outstanding bonuses and allowances, following their 1-0 win over Burundi in their first Africa Cup of Nations Group B fixture. The squad was an hour late for training on Tuesday, before Mikel Obi persuaded the players, to come out and train ahead of tomorrow’s crunch clash against Guinea. The NFF, which receives its funding from the government, has denied it was responsible for the delay in paying the players’ bonuses. It is however understood that payments would be paid, before Gernot Rohr’s men take on Syli Stars, looking for a win that will see them qualify for the Round of 16. This comes few days after the Super Falcons staged a sit-in protest at their hotel in Paris, after they were eliminated from the Women’s World Cup in France, over monies owed

Names Of Ministers: Buhari To Submit List To Senate Before July 2

Top-ranking lawmakers in Nigeria’s National Assembly said they were expecting President Muhammadu Buhari to submit a list of ministers that will form his federal executive council before or by July 2. The Ahmad Lawan-led 9th Senate would upon resumption from its two weeks recess in July begin a speedy screening and confirmation of persons whose names are expected to have been submitted by the Presidency before the July 2 resumption of the upper legislative chamber. A ranking senator told The Guardian, however, that at the moment, nothing is on the ground regarding the list of persons to be confirmed as ministers but was optimistic that within the two weeks of the Senate recess, the President would have submitted the list. Another lawmaker who just got elevated from the House of Representatives to the Senate in the February 23, 2019 election said that although the President is still within a reasonable time if he submits the list before July, expectations are that President Muhammadu

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has described as mere witch-hunt the investigations commenced by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the various institutions where he had served or presently serving. The Senate president said this yesterday in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu. Saraki was responding to EFCC’s reaction to a report that the anti-graft agency had written a letter to the Kwara State Government demanding for all details of salaries, allowances, estacode or any other entitlement enjoyed by Saraki during his tenure as governor of the state between 2003 and 2011. Saraki argued that the exercise by the EFCC was only aimed at settling scores, laced with malicious and partisan motives. The EFCC in the report had claimed that, “the commission’s letter to the Kwara State Government House, which sought an inquest into Saraki’s earnings as the state governor, from 2003 to 2011 was dated Friday

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino will miss Liverpool's Champions League semi-final vs Barcelona

The Egyptian was stretchered off during Saturday evening's 3-2 Premier League win at Newcastle with a head injury, while his strike partner Firmino is struggling with a groin injury. Firmino was replaced in the starting team by Daniel Sturridge and was already confirmed out of the Barcelona game, but Salah's absence compounds the difficulty of the task for Jurgen Klopp's side, who are 3-0 down after the first leg. The German confirmed that both players would be out in a press conference on Monday, saying that the decision had been taken on medical grounds and was out of his control. "It's not a precaution, it's a concussion," said Klopp. "He would not even be allowed to play, so that's it. "He feels ok but it's not good enough from a medical point of view, that's all. He's desperate, everything, but we cannot do it. He can play at the weekend."

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Monday the first day of Ramadan fast in Nigeria. Abubakar announced the sighting of the new crescent in Sokoto on Sunday in a radio and television broadcast. He said the new moon was sighted in various places across the country, which indicates that Sunday is the end of 8th Islamic month of Sha’aban. The Sultan said that reports of the moon sighting were received from Muslim leaders and organisations across the country. “Upon due verification and authentication by the national moon sighting committee and states committees’ confirmation, as well as routine scrutiny, the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan signifies the end of Sha’aban 1440 AH. “In accordance with Islamic law, the Muslim Ummah is to commence fasting on Monday, May 6, 2019 accordingly,” he said. He enjoined all Muslims to devote themselves fully to the worship of Allah throughout the Holy Month, and use the period to pray for leaders at all levels, prog

BAD NEWS! Mohamed Salah Seriously Injured In Liverpool’s Victory Against Newcastle

Premier League top scorer Mohamed Salah was taken off on a stretcher during Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle. The Reds forward was left clutching his head after an aerial collision with Magpies keeper Martin Dubravka. Salah, who scored his team’s second goal, was replaced by Divock Origi after 73 minutes with the match level at 2-2. Origi quickly made his presence felt, heading in the Anfield side’s winner with four minutes remaining. The result means the title race will definitely go to the final day of the season on Sunday, 12 May. Liverpool are two points clear of rivals Manchester City, who will play their game in hand against Leicester on Monday. Before that, Liverpool will face Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday, and Salah’s injury will be a concern for manager Jurgen Klopp as his side attempt to overturn a 3-0 deficit from the first game. “We’ll have to see and we’ll have to do a proper assessment,” Klopp said of Salah’s prognos

City are involved in one of the tightest Premier League title races in years with the Reds, as they lead their rivals by one point with two matches remaining. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is no stranger to winning league titles with eight in his top-level managerial career so far, but believes Liverpool have been the staunchest challenger despite facing off against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid in previous campaigns.

Democrat Nancy Pelosi elected US House speaker for second time

Image
Democrat Nancy Pelosi was elected on Thursday (Jan 3) to be the new speaker of the United States House of Representatives as her party took majority control of the chamber following its election victory on Nov 6. This marks Ms Pelosi's second stint as Speaker. She was the first woman ever to hold the job, serving from 2007 until 2011, when Republicans began an eight-year run in the House majority. Ms Pelosi received 220 votes for Speaker, while Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy got 192 votes. A smattering of others received the remaining votes in the chamber that holds 435 seats. The election puts Ms Pelosi in position to lead the opposition to President Donald Trump's agenda and to conduct in-depth investigations of his administration following two years during which Republicans have mainly given him a free pass. Mr Trump congratulated her, saying he hoped they could work together. Holding a surprise media appearance hours after Ms Pelosi addressed the new De

Manchester stabbings: counter-terror police raid house in city

Image
Three people including a police officer injured in ‘frenzied’ New Year’s Eve attack Counter-terrorism police have raided a house in Manchester after three people including a British Transport Police officer were stabbed in a “frenzied attack” during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The incident, classified as critical, was being investigated by counter-terrorism police officers after the perpetrator was allegedly heard shouting Islamist slogans during the attack just before 9pm at Victoria station in the city. A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody. On Tuesday, officers confirmed they were searching a property in the Cheetham Hill area of the city where the attacker is believed to have lived. Russ Jackson, an assistant chief constable with Greater Manchester police (GMP), described the attack on the officer and a couple in their 50s as “frenzied” and “random in nature”. It took place near the scene of the 2017 Manchester Arena bomb
