Liberian Vice President Joseph Boakai on Friday acknowledged former football star George Weah’s victory in the presidential election and appealed for unity in the country’s first democratic transfer of power in decades. “I respect the will of the people as announced by the National Electoral Commission,” Boakai said, adding that he had called Weah to congratulate him. “I reject any temptation of imposing pain, hardship, agony and uncertainty,” he said. “My name will not be used as (an) excuse for one drop of human blood to be spilt in this country.”

Alleged N919m fraud: EFCC, ICPC begin probe of suspended NHIS boss

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has begun investigations into allegations of misappropriation of funds and abuse of office levelled against the suspended Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf. The EFCC stated this in a letter dated December 21, 2017, which was addressed to the current acting Executive Secretary of the NHIS. The investigations by the commission started five months after Yusuf was suspended by the Federal Ministry of Health. The ministry, four months ago, submitted the report of a panel on the allegations against Yusuf to the Presidency. In its report, the panel accused the suspended NHIS boss of N919m fraud. The EFCC’s letter was titled ‘Investigation into activities of Prof. Usman Yusuf –suspended Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme’. BREAKING: Osun workers begin strike over half salary

Labour leaders led by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Osun State, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, on Wednesday led other unions’ leaders to the State Secretariat at Abere to shut down the place as workers commenced the indefinite strike. Labour leaders had on Friday announced that they would begin an indefinite strike immediately after the Christmas break over modulated salary, lack of promotion and the non remittance of their contributory pension deductions to workers’ pension accounts. The NLC chairman, the chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Amudah Wakeel and other Labour leaders stormed the secretariat gate as early as 7am on Wednesday to ensure compliance with the directive from the labour leaders. Former Monaco player, George Weah, has been voted president of Liberia after clinching 12 of the 15 counties in the west African country. Weah has taken to Twitter to thank all his supporters, saying that he plans to liberate the country. The striker-turned politician becomes the 25th president of the country. “I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends, and my loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season,” Weah said on Twitter before the results were announced.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has admitted that he and some other people he did not name can no longer be laughing with President Muhammadu Buhari as they were doing when they were in opposition. He said in those days, he and others would be laughing and rolling on the floor of Buhari’s living room. The extra-ordinary meeting of the Federal Executive Council will continue tomorrow, Thursday, December 21 - Before today’s meeting, President Muhammadu Buhari swore-in the remaining 7 permanent secretaries out of the 22 appointed earlier this year - The Council is expected to deliberate and take decisions on pending issues, at its continuation on Thursday The senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, says the extra-ordinary meeting of the Federal Executive Council, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, will continue on Thursday, December 21, NAN reports. Shehu, who made this known in Abuja on Wednesday, December 20, said the meeting was extended to Thursday to enable the Council deliberate and take decisions on pending issues.
