European champions Real Madrid have decided to part ways with manager Julen Lopetegui, a day after the club were thrashed 5-1 by arch rivals Barcelona. Lopetegui has been in charge since the start of the season but has overseen a terrible start to the league which sees them languish at the ninth spot. Real Madrid Castilla coach and former player Santiago Solari will take charge of the team for the time being. Real Madrid's statement says the decision has been taken "in a bid to change the run of results that the team was in, with all the team's season objectives still possible."

The Central Bank of Nigeria has increased the capital requirements for microfinance banks in the country in a bid to tackle the challenge of inadequate capital base in the sub-sector. The CBN announced the upward review of the minimum capital requirement in a circular dated October 22, 2018 to all microfinance banks in the country. The minimum capital requirement for unit and state microfinance banks was raised by 900 per cent each to N200m and N1bn, respectively from N20m and N100m, while that of national microfinance banks increased by 150 per cent to N5bn from N2bn. The Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, CBN, Mr Kevin Amugo, said the apex bank reviewed the minimum capital requirement in exercise of the powers conferred on it by the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act and in furtherance of its mandate to promote a sound financial system in the country. He noted that given the role of microfinance banks in economic growth and development, the Microfinance...

Mr Sado Daniel, North Central Secretary of the association made the remark in Bida while inaugurating a micro-finance bank established by the Federal Polytechnic, Bida. “These micro-finance banks lost their licences because they fell short during the regulation exercise carried out by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN),’’ he said. He said that non adherence to corporate governance contributed to the collapse of the banks, urging the management and staff members of the new bank to adhere strictly to the rules establishing it. “Banks do not die, people kill them; please do not kill the Federal Polytechnic Bida Micro-Finance Bank; ensure you adhere strictly to the rules of the game,’’ he said. He said he believed Atiku has ‘re-discovered and re-positioned himself’ and is now good enough to enjoy his support in the next election. The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were on Monday conspicuously absent at a parade organised to commemorate Nigeria’s 58th independence anniversary. The strictly military event held at the Eagles Square, Abuja, was attended by President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. Recall that Saraki and Dogara recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. Also in attendance at the parade was the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was also absent at the event attended by two former military leaders: Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.) and Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.). On arrival at the venue, Buhari first took the national salute before moving to inspect the parade in a motorcade. He later returned to the VIP stand to join Osinbajo, Onnoghen, Gowon, Abdulsalami and other dignitaries.
